Woman listening to podcast on phone

Marty Was The Envy of All the Guys in 6th Grade

July 23, 20242 min read

Every time we did a project or needed someone to speak we would have Marty stand up and just mark down our A+.

For years I thought it was because he was “the popular guy”. The attractive people with lots of confidence can get pretty much whatever ever they want right?

Turns out there was something else going on beneath the surface.

Almost every successful person I’ve met since the 6th grade had a trait in common that I wasn’t really looking for.

It wasn’t obvious because it’s not something you can spot on the outside.

You don’t learn this in high school…

Your first jobs don’t ask you for this directly…

Nobody pulls you aside and says make sure to read the book on how to do this. You must…

“Show first, then tell later”

In a world where EVERYONE can have a broadcast booth (podcast), platform (social media), online business (website) – it has become CRUCIAL to prove why you are worth listening to.

We are so overwhelmed by content at this point that people scroll and wait to be stopped by something interesting.

So how do we do that? How do we get people’s attention AND earn the right to win their business?

I propose we talk less about what we think and post more about what we are doing!

Here are 5 people that show their work on social feeds as a regular part of their routine.

Why?

Because they want people to KNOW they can do, not just talk.

@Ben Jordan (show your work)

My brother Ben is a fantastic creative. He has his hands in multiple projects almost all the time. One of the things I’ve always admired about him is his ability to crank out work and display it well. Here is a hobby that not only shows his skillset but relates well to what he does as a professional.

@Chantel Soumis (Show your work through struggle)

Chantel was a fellow co-host of mine on @The (Un)Learn Show. One of the many things that makes her really impactful is her willingness to share her struggle. Giving people a glimpse into how she deals with challenges builds her confidence to finish the job.

Here is a great example of her talking about health challenges as a way to grow stronger.

@Jake Melton (show your work learning experience)

My friend Jake (insert two Jake jokes here) has gained much experience by hitting life’s experiences head-on. He speaks about cutting the crap and leading with your heart. The experience he shares about his experience with Tourett’s has inspired many.

He continues to show how to keep working despite what life throws at you.
