Community ReBuild @Work

Janie Bordner, Founder, Community Rebuild.
Janie is an accomplished community leader and change agent pursuing fundamental systemic changes to alleviate poverty and addressing barriers. She brings more than 20 years of experience in nonprofit management, youth development and workforce development. Community ReBuild was established to deliver solutions to remove barriers to poverty alleviation and open doors for working families through a holistic approach.

Project Description:

We want to remove barriers such as transportation and childcare by bringing outreach programs to apartment buildings and leveraging on-line workforce development curricula. More than 55% of DFW residents are apartment dwellers and more than 90% of apartment dwellers are unchurched (Noah, 2010). Further, nonprofits and churches need to “walk” with participants for basic needs and ongoing support.

The Community ReBuild @Work project will be building out a workforce development platform for both individual direct access and nonprofit program access. The project seeks to benefit the vulnerable populations and small nonprofits who cannot afford tech platforms. By bringing together existing tools into a single portal, users will be able to get job skills find work, find social services, and build financial capability.

Community ReBuild @Work will serve as top-of-funnel mechanism for proactively serving the needs of our community to provide opportunities to step into high-demand career pathways with a sustainable on ramp into educational and workforce providers.

Who is involved? Who else needs to be involved?
• Community Re-Build: focus on getting employers involved, city support
• AdvanceNet Labs: the Empowerment Marketplace learning management system
• Impact Focus: general outreach to nonprofits, chambers, other supporters

Project Goals:

The goal of the platform is to expand access to transformative services such as workforce development, financial capability, and soft skills training. The project will re-configure pre-existing tools to meet those needs.

Project metrics:

1. Established set of partnerships across 3-4 communities that embrace the approach of Community ReBuild @Work as a proof of concept
2. Launch a full vetted working platform Community ReBuild re-configuring the Empowerment Marketplace (online courses for upskilling/re-skilling)
3. Target 50-100 students begin the 8 weeks program across DFW
