Diversity Training

Dr. George Yancey, Author and Professor, Baylor University
Dr. George Yancey is a Professor of Institute for Studies of Religion and Sociology at Baylor University. He has published several academic and Christian books on the topics of institutional racial diversity, racial identity, multiracial churches and anti-Christian hostility. His latest book, Beyond Racial Division (Intervarsity Press), points to collaborative conversation as a better, and Christ based alternative to colorblindness and antiracism.

Project Description:

The purpose of this project is to develop and test a collaborative conversation alternative to traditional antiracism programs. Working with Christian churches, high schools, and colleges we will implement collaborative conversations programs, learn how to make them effective and publish results in academic and nonacademic venues. Eventually we will develop the proper tools to allow us to promote collaborative conversations as a useful and Christ-based instrument to facilitate racial reconciliation and reduce racial alienation.
Who is involved? Who else needs to be involved?

• Researchers to help develop the training and measure results.
• Educators to provide contacts and information about our educational institutions.
• Business individuals to provide perspectives, contacts, and economic support.
• Government officials to plan movement into the public arena.

Project Goals:

To further test the viability of collaborative conversations in Christian settings:
1. Collect data from 6 high schools, 3 churches and a college on implementation of collaborative conservation program.
2. Identify ways to improve our training.
3. Draft a research paper based on our initial findings.

Project metrics:

• Recruit at least 4 high schools, 2 churches and 1 college for next year’s research.
• Improve collaborative conversation training program.
• Develop a social network to allow for future research.
